I disagree. Rich can control and hijack the resources or development of a country. If you look at American Parliament, majority of them are rich tycoons. They dont understand global warming, dont recognise rights of people and you can make a big list. Most Tycoons are too busy running their businesses and making them rich to care about poor people. Some who has a deep faith or desire to reach people may give a small pocket of his money. I think an MP should be someone who really cares for people, play a role to bring democratic open systems, protect the rights of people & create opportunities for poor people.

We have a crisis when it comes to population consolidation programme, just to give one example. Several other issues require immediate attention, effort and lobbying from someone who has the time to do it. I dont believe that a person who is involved with working these issues can have two jobs. Anyways MPs are getting a fat salary now, so please devote time to the cause of people.I think if you study the cases why MPs can control and buy votes in Maldives was the evil money. The island NGOs and the people are promised better facilities, better services and upliftment of their lives. So its undersandable why money played a role but at same time people were dissapointed when these MPs dont fulfil the promised obligations. So creating awareness alongwith creating systems so that those who try to buy votes can be exposed at island & National level.

Mass media needs to play a critical role, study the case and get real evidence to make a case. I think this will help in a country where transparency and accountability is an issue. Why exactly its happening, this is not acceptable in any other country and in the Maldives but still its happening unless we dont stop these people.
